Dr. Abdul Jabbar Sangi

Professor and Chairman

Biography

Dr. Abdul Jabbar Sangi is currently serving as Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Civil Engineering at NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi. He graduated from NED University with a degree in Civil Engineering in 2000, securing the First Class First Position and being awarded the Gold Medal. He was also awarded the first-ever Dr. AT Khan Memorial Gold Medal for outstanding academic performance in the Bachelor of Civil Engineering. After completing his Master's in Civil Engineering specialising in Structural Engineering, he proceeded to the United Kingdom to pursue a PhD in Civil Engineering (Structures) from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom and was awarded a PhD in 2011. Dr. Sangi has been involved in teaching, research, practice and allied activities in the field of Civil and Structural Engineering for over 25 years. He has published his research in international journals and conferences. He has worked on several research projects, funded by the national and international agencies, including the Sindh Higher Education Commission (SHEC), Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, National Research Program for Universities (NRPU), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan, National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF). His areas of research include non-linear finite element modelling of reinforced concrete structures, dynamic behaviour of structures, sustainable structures and built environment, sustainable construction materials, masonry construction, earthquake engineering, vulnerability assessment and disaster mitigation. He has been instrumental in curriculum review and development in the field of Civil Engineering as part of NCRC and now ECRDC. Dr. Sangi has been actively engaged with PEC in Outcome-Based Education accreditation and related activities. He was involved with PEC as an Expert Member in the recent Washington Accord visit of Pakistan by the WA team. Dr. Sangi has established close links with the industry and has been involved in various research and consultancy projects in Pakistan and the United Kingdom. Under his leadership, the testing and consulting services at the Department of Civil Engineering have been expanded, covering all areas of Civil Engineering. Dr. Sangi is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Pakistan and a member of the Central Council of the IEP. He is also the Vice President of the NED International Alumni Network Association (NEDIAN) Pakistan. Dr. Sangi is also a member of the Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council (ACECC) committee TC-14 on sustainable infrastructure.
